29 Years Of Khalnayak : A Box Office Hit That Gave Sanjay Dutt A New Indentity Of A Deadly Villain With Kind Heart
Subhash Ghai's action masala entertainer, Khalnayak, turns 29 today. Sanjay Dutt played the antagonist, Ballu, and wowed the audience so much that they remember his performance and charisma to this day. Jackie Shroff played an honest cop, Ram, just like we were accustomed to, but Madhuri Dixit's Ganga was something different from the regular female cops that existed by then.
Made on a budget of 2.50 crores approx, Khalanayak earned 12.50 crore nett and 21.50 crore gross at the domestic box office. The distributors' share was at 8.50 crore, confirming a Super Hit verdict for the film. Khalnayak had a bumper opening, the biggest opening for any Bollywood film in 1993, and ended up becoming the second highest-crossing Bollywood film of the year behind Govinda and Chunky Panday's blockbuster comedy, Aankhen, which despite being a smaller film earned a whopping 14 crore nett at the box office.
More than the box office, Ghai's Khanayak is known for its music and Sanjay Dutt's villainous avatar. Choli Ke Piche and Nayak Nahi are still being played at parties and functions in India. Nana Patekar was in talks for the role, but things didn't work out between him and Subhash Ghai. Aamir was offered the role of Ram, but declined because he preferred playing the antagonist. Finally, Sanjay came on board and made the character memorable. Don't tell me that where you hear these lines, "Nayak nahi Khalnayak hu mein" and the bass, the face of Sanjay doesn't appear in front of your eyes.
The film was almost on the verge of not being released because of Sanjay Dutt's arrest in the 1993 Bombay blast case, but eventually the same events helped the film to open huge at the ticket windows. Even today, we know Sanjay Dutt as Khalnayak and will remember it for years. Sorry Kancha Cheena, sorry Adheera and Shudh Singh, but Ballu is far superior to you guys.
